Celebrate Thanksgiving Without Meat

Walk the Line Star Joaquin Phoenix Talks Turkey in Vegetarian Thanksgiving Ad

When it comes to helping animals, Academy Award-nominated Walk the Line star Joaquin Phoenix always walks the walk and talks the talk. The vegan star speaks up for turkeys in a clever vegetarian ad for PETA that was directed by Wedding Crashers director David Dobkin. "Holidays can be murder on turkeys. Let’s make this one for the birds," declares Phoenix.

Why does Joaquin want people to have a heart instead of a drumstick this holiday season? Every year, 45 million turkeys are killed for Thanksgiving alone. In factory farms, birds are crammed into filthy sheds, packed together so tightly that they can barely move. In slaughterhouses, turkeys have their throats slit while they are still conscious. During an undercover investigation at a Butterball slaughterhouse in Ozark, Arkansas, workers were documented punching and stomping on live turkeys, slamming them against walls, and worse.

This Thanksgiving, give up the giblets and give everyone—especially turkeys—something to be thankful for by dishing up delicious vegetarian fare. Whether you’re hosting a holiday party or taking a dish to share at a family get-together, try these scrumptious vegetarian recipes. For a fabulous faux turkey that even confirmed carnivores will happily gobble down, serve a savory soy-based Tofurky roast or wheat-based Unturkey roast with meatless gravy and stuffing.
